Meet Alex McGolpin, Area Sales Manager with vast dust and fume expertise

In the latest edition of our meet the team series, we’re speaking to Alex McGolpin, our Area Sales Manager for the Northeast of England, about his experience working in dust and fume extraction, and his ATEX expertise.
What is your job role at APS, and what are your main responsibilities?
I am the Area Sales Manager for the Northeast of England, responsible for promoting our dust extraction solutions to customers in this area of the country, as well as maintaining good relationships with clients, and coordinating with the rest of the APS team to ensure projects are delivered to a high standard.
As part of my role, I advise on products and systems, working with the project design and installation teams to bring customers the optimal solutions for their dust extraction needs.
How many years of experience do you have working within dust and fume extraction?
I have 12 years of experience in the dust and fume extraction industry, having first worked as an external sales manager for an Out of Home advertising agency before moving into the industry I’m in now.
My first role in the industry was with the dust collector manufacturer Camfil, where I gained and utilised lots of knowledge about the filtration element of a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system. Like the team here at APS, Camfil prided themselves on their interpretation and implementation of ATEX, and this has followed me to my role as Area Sales Manager.
Working at APS is now allowing me to develop the overall system design and commercial proficiency aspects to my repertoire, which I hope can lead me to be a complete LEV sales engineer, providing even greater expertise to our new and existing customers.
I also have a P602 qualification, which shows I have the skills and knowledge to design effective LEV systems, protecting employee health and ensuring regulatory compliance for our customers.
What’s your proudest career and personal achievement to date?
Career-wise I would say the relationships I have built along the way. I have met some amazing people; many who I consider friends for life, and as an Area Sales Manager now, those relationships are vital to the daily work we do at APS.
I’ve enjoyed working on lots of great projects – notably ones like Fox’s Biscuits, where we designed and installed a state-of-the-art dust extraction system to replace legacy equipment. The best projects are the ones where it feels like a completely collaborative process, working directly with operational teams to build systems that help increase safety and efficiency.
Personally, my biggest achievement is my family. They fill the majority of my spare time and I couldn’t be happier.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever been given?
The road to success is always under construction. Keep learning and adapting and treat people with respect whilst doing so.
In every customer-focused industry, it’s vital you continue to learn and adapt to customer needs. A great example from the past few years is the implementation of predictive maintenance. Now, when we install a new system, our customers are able to have software installed on the extractor that flags when it may not be working as they should be.
The software, iCue™, comes as part of our partnership with Donaldson. It works by collecting information from sensors installed on the dust extractor, and relaying said information back to ourselves, so we can monitor remotely and flag if we spot any issues. It allows us to see small problems well before they spiral into a bigger concern, and enables us to get engineers out before systems stop working.
If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Sunday Roast with all the trimmings!
What gets you up in the morning (other than an alarm clock)?
My 8-year-old son!
Any other notable hobbies/facts about you?
I like to try and keep fit, and I would love to complete the London Marathon one day. Keeping fit is a great mental and physical boost, and definitely helps in my role at APS.
