Case Study: Animal Food Manufacturer

APS was recently contacted by a new client, a horse food manufacturer, to overhaul their existing ductwork system and design and installation of new ductwork to support new packing machines added to their operations. The existing system included a filter unit, extraction fan, and non-return valve to service a packing machine and several conveying machines.

Challenges faced

The main challenge was the time constraints faced. The client had purchased two additional packing machines to be installed urgently, which included working over the weekend. The project required the removal of outdated ductwork connected to machinery that was no longer in use, followed by installing the new system. This two-step process needed to be carefully coordinated to ensure that the removal did not interfere with ongoing operations and that the installation proceeded without any delays.

Solution provided

To accommodate the new machines into the existing system, APS redesigned the ductwork, incorporating the existing filter and fan. The project began with removing outdated ductwork connected to machinery that was no longer in use. APS then designed and installed a new ductwork system to accommodate the existing and new packing machines.

The implementation was swift, commencing on a Friday and achieving full operational status by midday Monday. To ensure optimal performance, APS conducted thorough commissioning and balancing the system to deliver the required air volume to each machine. Additionally, the commissioning report included an assessment of the existing filter media’s condition, enabling the client to plan for necessary maintenance and sustain the required extraction levels.

Benefits and outcomes

The swift installation of the new ductwork system minimised operational downtime, ensuring that the client could continue their operations with minimal disruption. The commissioning report provided valuable insights into the condition of the existing filter media, aiding the client in proactive maintenance planning. As a result of this successful project, APS has been awarded further work for this client, servicing their extraction systems for the foreseeable future.
